European Bike Adventures (See Also: European Ski Adventures)

THE INSIDE LINE
Road and mountain biking in the Alps are adventures that blow away their counterparts in North America. The same massive ski resorts we visit in the winter offer incredible summer lift access to 500-year old trails, adrenaline-pumping downhill tracks, and bike parks that dwarf anything you’ve ever seen. The road bike routes that make the classic tours of the Alps so famous are also right at our fingertips, and we can take you to perfect ribbons of asphalt through the most bucolic settings in Italy, France, and Switzerland. And at the end of the day, the luxurious attention to detail will make this bike adventure your best ever.

What sets these European trips apart are the properties we handpick for their commitment to the Epic way of living and the extra cultural diversions that add a few more centuries to your itinerary—a private viewing at worldfamous art museums, VIP tickets to the Montreux Jazz Festival, or a private tasting at a world-class winery.

GETTING THERE
From Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland, we set out for the short trip to nearby ski and bike resorts in France, Italy and Switzerland. Itineraries typically leave the United States on Friday and depart from Europe the following Sunday.

BIKING PACKAGES
Europe is the most cycle-centric continent on the planet. Depending on the kind of riding you’re looking for, we can tailor an itinerary heavy on the downhill, more on the cross-country side, or a perfect balance of both. Fields of wildflowers, country roads and insane alpine climbs and descents reaffirm why you’ll never look at two-wheeled travel quite the same way.

MOUNTAIN BIKING PACKAGES
VEBIER AND RHONE VALLEY SWITZERLAND
Verbier is a perfect base camp for the trails surrounding the Rhône Valley. With several world-class downhill tracks and undiscovered singletracks through forest, high alpine, and farm country, it makes for a great primer to later adventures. We head to Zermatt for a legendary ride up the Gornergrat cog-rail train for a 6,000-foot descent into the postcard perfect village. Then we ride the buttery trails and North-Shore features of Crans-Montana before descending through the vineyards of Sierre. To cap it off, we add a day at Rochers de Naye above Montreux, finishing with après-beers on Lake Geneva and tickets to the star-studded Montreux Jazz Festival.

PORT DU SOLEIL, CHAMPERY, SWITZERLAND
The 10 resorts that straddle the Swiss and French border and comprise the Portes du Soleil Region have quietly gained notoriety as the Alps mountain bike Mecca over the last five years. With six different freeride zones that combine downhill and dirt jumping, bike parks, more than 650 km of marked trails, and dozens of secret trails, Portes Du Soleil is an ideal place for your bike to take you on an epic adventure this summer, and the Swiss village of Champéry is the ultimate base to hang your helmet at the end of the day.

LAKE GARDA, ITALY
Located in Northern Italy’s Trentino, the Garda region is home to some of the world’s finest singletrack. Perfectly--pitched Army grade footpaths have been repurposed to create a trail system of over 1,000km; from tram-accessed downhills to X-C epics. Outrageous food and wine and the omnipresent backdrop views of the lake make Garda one of our favorite trips.

We’ll stay in Malcesine, a funky medieval town surrounded by olive groves, close to the 1800m cablecar up Monte Baldo, where we’ll do most of our riding. Fantastic dining options, killer wine, and some of the world’s best mountain biking are right at your fingertips. The tram-accessed runs off Monte Baldo are among the most perfect in Europe; long, flowy, and they really shine in the fall with a carpet of fallen leaves. A ferry ride to the other side of the lake, serves up Monte Tremalzo, and a number of cross-country circuits as long as you can handle, or as easy as calling the van for another lift. There are months’ worth of options in Garda, and we guarantee you’ll want to come back for more after this trip.

ROAD BIKING PACKAGES
TUSCANY AND PIEDMONT, ITALY

As the deserted country roads and ultra-smooth hilly ribbons of asphalt roll you through Tuscany’s wine country, you’ll know why Italy is a nation of cyclists. You’ll pass castles, vineyards and medieval hill towns, but you’ll come to a full stop for the best bottle of wine in your life, which is never more than a few clicks down the road from the last one. We are based outside of Siena in a private villa, but may decide to spend a night in the heart of Siena or Florence if that’s the way the mood blows. Siena’s Palio Horse Race through the Piazza del Campo is the stuff movies are made of, and we dine in the region’s finest Slow Food restaurants while drinking the best vini Toscana. Art, food, wine, culture and countryside that never ends all add to the continent’s best road biking to make this a trip you’ll never quit talking about.

RHONE VALLEY, AND BERNESE OBERLAND SWITZERLAND
The same beautiful base of our mountain bike adventure along the Rhône is home to some of Switzerland’s best road cycling as well. We’ll start in Verbier, riding deserted country roads up high alpine valleys. Then we’ll switch locations mid-week for rides around the Eiger and Jungfrau region, staying in the historic alpine village of Grindlewald. Between the epic rides, luxurious chalet accommodation, and incredible mountain scenery, this road bike adventure is the true definition of Swiss bliss.
